Brutus the “Ambassadog”

For those meeting him for the first time, it’s hard to imagine that Brutus, a large and lovable teddy bear-like dog, was from a dogfighting bust. But thanks to animal welfare group Compassion And Responsibility for Animals (CARA), Brutus and the nearly 200 other surviving dogs rescued from an illegal dogfighting operation in Laguna in March 2012 are getting a second lease on life and a chance to be regular, loving companion dogs.

At the recent Love Tails, A Valentine’s Celebration for the Luv-a-Bulls fundraiser for CARA’s rescued Laguna Pit Bulls, Brutus was clearly a crowd favorite, making friends wherever he went. With wagging tail and smiling eyes, this gentle giant proved to be a powerful and persuasive “ambassadog” for Pit Bulls and rescues from a dogfighting background. When he wasn’t lapping up hugs and kisses from his female fans, he was snuggling with his foster mom Shiella and playing with his human “sister” Isabella.

“Brutus was giving high-five’s to lolas (grandmothers), ates (sisters) kuyas (brothers) and babies,” said a beaming Shiella.

The next day Brutus made a special guest appearance to represent the Laguna Pit Bulls at another benefit event in Tiendesitas. Shiella noted that, like the previous day, Brutus worked his charm and won hearts.

“I was so proud to see him being a great ‘ambassadog’ for the Laguna Pit Bulls,” she said.

Shiella and her partner Julien Bourraux began fostering Brutus in November 2012. One of the reasons they decided to bring Brutus home was so that he could get more personalized attention for his health issues, which include heartworms, anemia and muscle wasting. In the few short months that they’ve been caring for him, Brutus has steadily put on weight and gotten healthier. Brutus is thriving in a home environment. He is also learning basic commands for obedience training – in French!

“Brutus was definitely someone’s pet before,” observed Shiella. “He is so well behaved and he knows how to live inside a house.”

On a happy note, Shiella and Julien have decided to make it official and adopt Brutus.

Wherever he goes, Brutus is helping promote a positive image for Pit Bulls and survivors of the dogfighting ring.
